Structural transformation and poverty alleviation in Sub-Saharan Africa countries: sectoral value-added analysis

Purpose This study aims to examine the effect of structural transformation on poverty alleviation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries with a higher share services as percentage gross domestic product (GDP). The specifically focuses value-added GDP agricultural, manufacturing, industrial, and service sectors using time series data from 1988 2019. Design/methodology/approach utilizes autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL) bound test framework for estimation, based conclusions drawn augmented Dickey-Fuller Phillips–Perron unit root tests, which provide evidence mixed order integration. Findings result reveals that agriculture (AVA), manufacturing (MVA), industrial (IVA), (SVA) have positive significant impact both short long run. However, sector is found be more effective reducing compared other examined this study. Additionally, challenges notion SSA undergone an immature transformation. Instead, it pattern stagnant transformation, indicated by lack growth shares GDP. Practical implications To enhance productivity reduce poverty, economies should adopt development strategy prioritizes heavy sectors, leading transition agricultural secondary tertiary sectors. Originality/value contributes emerging literature investigating efficient countries, also determine if experienced due growing sector.
